The video was Directed by Marc Klasfeld (Rockhard Productions) and was inspired by the works of the artist, Raymond Pettibon. The band members’ love of Pettibon’s work, led to their wanting a video that portrayed the band in a “Pettibon-esque world.” As for lefchannel’s role, we shared in the creative direction and were tasked to bring Pettibon’s work to life through animation. We really enjoyed the working on this music video and the collaboration with Skulley Fx and Marc Klasfeld.

“Known for his comic-like drawings with disturbing, ironic or ambiguous text, Pettibon’s subject matter is sometimes violent and anti-authoritarian. From the late 1970s through the mid-1980s, he was closely associated with the punk rock band Black Flag and the record label SST Records, both founded by his older brother Greg Ginn. Beginning in the mid 1980s, he became a well-known figure in the contemporary art scene.“
Process
Green Screen Footage
The Chili Peppers were filmed jamming, thrashing, and spinning on a green screen set. The footage was keyed and tracking dots rotoscoped out. We were then handed the footage to composite with the animations we were creating.
Early Footage Tests
Here you can see one of the styles applied to Flea’s chicken walk that was proposed for an overall treatment of the footage.
Scene Test
This is a early scene test as we were working through how the footage would meld with the animations as well as figuring out the overall narrative of the piece.
Full Video Animatic
Here we have the animatic for the final animation. There were a lot of discussions with the director, March, on when and where certain Pettibon pieces should be placed. This is the final animatic that we all agreed on which shows pacing and placement of where each Pettibon piece would be placed. From here we continued on to final animation.
